Decluttering, cleaning...
Organizing is a lot of work. It's not easy to get all those things in your home organized and tidy, but it can be done!
I was postponing all summer the start of "the big decluttering"... but as I wanted to rearrange the room of my Daughter for the 1st day of school, I really needed to take a huuuge breath in late August and just jump in all the organizing, decluttering, cleaning. 🙈
To avoid my mistakes and be able to use some of the good practices, I collected these tips to help you get started on the journey towards organizing your family home!
1. Create a family calendar.
Organizing your schedule is a great way to get things done and make sure everyone's on the same page. By creating a family calendar, you can plan out household chores, school events, and other special occasions, so that everyone has an idea of what's coming up in the near future.
So if you know that by 1st September you want to reorganize, declutter and clean everything, the best advice I can give you is to start planning all steps well in advance!
If you make significant changes, you might not forget about the following tasks:
- Sell/donate old furniture
- Order/prepare new furniture - you can get inspirations from Pinterest!
- Set the date for painting the room(s), and book it in the calendars of the service provider/family members if you are DIY 😊
- Have a day for putting together new furniture, reorganizing + another one (at least) for cleaning
If no big changes are planned, but you want to maintain an organized and clean house, having a cleaning schedule included in your family calendar can be a great option!
And here are some tips for creating a good family calendar:
- Make sure everyone is on board with the calendar
- Schedule in time for fun and relaxation as well
- Make sure to check it often and update as needed
2. Declutter
A clean home is a happy home.😊
A cluttered house can be stressful, even if it’s just for you. And if your kids are constantly asking to go somewhere else because their room is too messy, it’s probably time for some organization! Decluttering can help create more space in your home so that everyone has room to relax and enjoy their living spaces more fully.
It will also make cleaning easier by reducing the amount of stuff that needs to be organized or put away each day.
So one last advice regarding decluttering is: do not leave it to the last moment 😁
Try to have a decluttering routine - and if you have things that are in good quality and can be used by others, you can also think about finding donation options!
3. Tackle one room at a time
The first step is to tackle one room at a time. This means that you need to set aside time for each room and make sure you're clear on what needs to be done before moving onto the next one.
You don't want to try and do everything at once, because it can get overwhelming! Instead of trying your best to tackle too many things at once (like an entire house), break it down into smaller steps so that there's more manageable work involved in achieving your goal.
You can use our Cleaning Schedule template to make planning your tasks easier!
4. Delegate household jobs to children.
When you're a parent, it's easy to feel like you have to do everything yourself. It's also easy for your children to feel like they don't want or need to be involved in household chores and tasks.
But, think about this: if everyone pitched in and helped each other out—no one would ever get their laundry done! You can't expect perfection from your children; just make sure that everyone has fun doing their part. And, don't forget that adults should also volunteer when they are able (or willing).
You are a team as a family, it is not only you, who needs to do all the chores!
+ If you teach your kids in an early age how to keep a house tidy and clean, do the laundry, feed the cat... whatever 😊 They learn real life skills that will help them getting over challenges easier as they grow too!
5. These additional tips will make your home more organized and easier to maintain.
In the following tips, we will discuss how to make your home more organized and easier to maintain.
Have a place for everything. A family should have a place for everything in their home, whether it's important or not. It can be as simple as labeling containers or bins with stickers so that you know exactly where everything is located in the house.
Use the internet for organization ideas and tricks! There are many great websites out there that offer helpful tips on how to make things more efficient (and less stressful). You can also ask friends or family members who are experienced at this sort of thing; they probably have some good ideas too!
Decluttering can be enjoyable when properly planned. A clear space is so welcoming to the eyes and mind!
ReplyDeleteExactly! :)
DeleteAmazing article! Very helpful
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for the feedback! Glad you found it useful :)
DeleteYes to decluttering- a clear home for a clear mind. I have a 'crap basket'. Anything that gets left about goes in the crap basket and once a week I empty it. If it can't be filed or put away, it gets binned. Works really well!
ReplyDeleteThanks Helen for the great idea!
DeleteI am a,ways looking for new ways to organize and declutter. Thanks for the tips,
ReplyDeleteGlad you found them useful :)
DeleteClutter makes me very anxious! I have a more minimalist style. I try to take 15 minutes a day and declutter any area that may need it. It helps to keep my house more manageable. Great posts! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the feedback! I totally agree, dedicating a little time regularly for decluttering and cleaning can really make a difference!
DeleteThis is helpful. I need to make a calendar for my family. When my kids were young, I did everything and didn't require enough of them. Now that my kids are teenagers, I feel like I'm making up for lost time... so they will be able to function in life on their own! lol
ReplyDeleteI am really happy that you found these hints helpful :)
DeleteI try to make sure everything is done before I go to bed each night. I work 11 hour days so the last thing I want to do on the weekend is clean, hah. I’m slowly getting into digital organization too.
ReplyDeleteThat is indeed a good strategy to make sure everything is done by the end of each day! Great that you are thinking about digital organization as well! :)
DeleteI love that you include children. Even before they can add real help they definitely add fun. My toddler tells me to mop because she loves it so much.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the feedback :) Yes, I realized for kids it is still fun! While they are "invisibly" developing many of their skills as well! My Daughter loves mopping too :D
DeleteI am definitely a believer in getting your children involved and in teaching them how to work from a young age.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the feedback, I totally agree with you :)
DeleteI have bene organizing my life more and more
